Nexperia Stop to China Shipments Triggers Hidden Chip Supply Crisis

A governance rupture at a major chip supplier could ripple through Europe’s car factories and consumer electronics. Nexperia said its China unit refused to make payments, prompting the suspension of wafer shipments and raising questions about IP, technology, authenticity and quality controls at its Dongguan plant. The company alleges unauthorised bank accounts and misuse of company seals, suggesting oversight has frayed. While Nexperia maintains that other plants remain operational and that it remains committed to staff and customers, the episode underscores how political frictions and internal governance can disrupt a supply chain that powers hundreds of billions of chips a year used in vehicles from VW to Mercedes. The wider backdrop includes Dutch government scrutiny and China’s temporary export measures, all occurring as the EU monitors chip and rare earth controls and considers resilience measures under its Chips Act Task Force.
