The German hairy snail earns its name from the numerous tiny fibers on its shell, which help it retain moisture and cling to riverside plants and debris it feeds on. Though it has lived on riverbanks and wetlands for thousands of years, decades of habitat destruction and pollution have driven its numbers down. In Britain the species wasn’t recorded until 1982, but fossil records suggest it has persisted here since Neolithic times and perhaps as far back as the last Ice Age, when Britain was joined to mainland Europe.
The current surveys, backed by partners including London Wildlife Trust, the Conchological Society of Great Britain, and the Port of London Authority, aim to understand where the snail still survives and how to protect those pockets.
