Puma in focus as Anta eyed takeover sparks Europe reshuffle

German sportswear group Puma jumped over 14% in Frankfurt after Bloomberg News reported that China’s Anta Sports is weighing a takeover and has hired an adviser to evaluate a bid. The bid could attract other contenders, with Li Ning and even Asics mentioned as potential players. Artémis, the holding company with a roughly 29% Puma stake, has said it is weighing options, adding to the debate over who might control the brand next.

Puma is navigating a difficult period. The company has seen significant value erosion over five years, and 2025 has been pressured by US tariffs on China and Vietnam, eroding margins. In Q3, Puma flagged ongoing sector and company-specific headwinds, including muted brand momentum, channel shifts, and elevated inventory. To restore growth, CEO Arthur Hoeld is pursuing a transformation that includes job cuts (900 announced in October after 500 earlier) and a shift toward direct-to-consumer sales, along with a narrower product range. The goal is to return to growth by 2027.

Outside the brand’s immediate market, Europe’s industrial landscape is evolving with large-scale investments in energy and mobility. Notably, CATL and Stellantis recently broke ground on Spain’s largest EV battery plant, underscoring a continental shift in manufacturing and technology that could influence how a new Puma ownership regime bets on supply chains and profitability.

Energy costs and policy shifts remain a backdrop for decisions by European consumer brands, including how tariffs and regional energy dynamics affect pricing and margins. As talks circulate about Anta, Li Ning, and other suitors, Puma’s strategy under new ownership would need to balance branding, direct-to-consumer expansion, and European manufacturing realities while facing resistance from influential stakeholders like Artémis.
