In a breakthrough that has stunned the sumo world, Danylo Yavhusishyn, competing as Aonishiki, has captured the Emperor’s Cup, becoming Ukraine’s first elite-level sumo champion. The 21-year-old arrived in Japan in 2022 as an 18-year-old refugee after Russia’s invasion, and finished the 15-day Fukuoka tournament with a 12-3 record before defeating Yokozuna grand champion Hoshoryu in a championship playoff. If rankings authorities confirm, this would mark the fastest-ever rise to sumo’s second-highest rank, Ozeki.
In the aftermath, he has drawn attention from fans in Japan and around the world, celebrated for defeating opponents with rare, rarely-used techniques. He was among the most cheered wrestlers at London’s Grand Sumo Tournament at the Royal Albert Hall last month.
The name Aonishiki signals blue in Japanese, a nod to his Ukrainian flag roots. His journey began with sumo at seven, alongsidejudo and freestyle wrestling. He fled with his family to Germany before moving to Japan in April 2022, even learning the language with help from a university sumo club captain he had met earlier. In his post-tournament interview, he remained focused on the future, saying: “No, I think this is just the beginning.”
If his rise continues, many analysts see him as a contender to become Europe’s first Yokozuna, a landmark that could reshape the sport’s history for generations to come. He has consistently impressed with his adaptability and technical depth, signaling a potential new era for European participation at the highest levels of sumo.
