It’s an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane, and among AHAs it has the smallest molecular structure, allowing deeper, faster penetration into the skin. This means it can stimulate collagen production in the dermis and promote a fresher, more luminous complexion. But because glycolic acid is an active ingredient, it requires careful introduction and mindful usage to avoid compromising your skin.

Glycolic acid acts as a powerful exfoliant, loosening the bonds that hold dead cells to the surface of the skin. This can reveal newer, healthier cells underneath and improve texture and tone. It’s effective for normal, combination, and oily skin types, and can also help with occasional breakouts. However, there are important caveats: over-exfoliation can strip natural oils and damage the skin’s protective barrier, leading to irritation, redness, dryness, flakiness, and increased sun sensitivity. Sensitivity tends to be higher in the winter when the skin barrier is already stressed by cold air and central heating.

To minimize risk, begin with a low concentration and test how your skin responds. Start with the lowest concentration in a gentle format, such as a cleanser that contains glycolic acid, since it’s washed off quickly and provides an immediate sensitivity check. Once you’ve acclimated, you can move to leave-on formulations like toners, serums, or moisturizers, where the concentration will be higher. The ideal concentration typically sits around 8% to 15%, with higher strengths reserved for professional use. Pay attention to the product’s pH: a pH of 3 to 4 ensures the glycolic acid strength is as stated and minimizes irritation.

Frequency and safety considerations also matter. Many people find that using glycolic acid 1–2 times per week works well with higher-strength products, while some mildly formulated products can be used daily. If you notice redness, flaking, or a fragile feel, reduce frequency or switch to a milder formulation. Don’t mix glycolic acid with retinoids at the same time—use them on alternate days after your skin has built up tolerance. Always wear sunscreen during the day, as exfoliation can make your skin more vulnerable to sun damage.

Who should take extra precautions
Sensitive skin may react to glycolic acid, so proceed with caution or consider alternatives like lactic acid. People with darker skin tones should be mindful of higher-strength glycolic products, as some formulations can alter skin pH and potentially cause irritation. Pregnant individuals can often use low-concentration glycolic acid, but it’s wise to consult a clinician for personalized guidance. If you can’t tolerate glycolic, alternatives such as lactic acid can offer gentle exfoliation with a lower irritation risk.

Glycolic acid can be a powerful tool for achieving brighter skin and smoother texture, but its strength and frequency must be tailored to your skin’s needs. Start slow, monitor your skin’s reaction, use sunscreen, and avoid combining it with other strong actives on the same day. With thoughtful use, glycolic acid can deliver noticeable results without compromising the skin’s barrier or long-term health.
